Finished Your Online Texas LTC Course? Here’s What Happens Next

Completing the online classroom portion is a major step, but it is not the end of the LTC training process. Texas DPS states that online students must also complete range instruction and a handgun proficiency demonstration with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor.

Last verified with Texas DPS: October 2, 2026

No paper certificate: DPS states students do not receive documentation for completing LTC training: “training results will be entered into your RSD Connect account by your Texas Qualified LTC Instructor.” Older websites may mention an LTC-100, LTC-101 or LTC-104 certificate. DPS discontinued the LTC-100 and LTC-101 effective April 14, 2025.

Your Next Steps

  1. Complete the online classroom training. At least four and no more than six hours, covering the four required topics: laws that relate to weapons and the use of deadly force; handgun use and safety, including use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns; non-violent dispute resolution; and proper storage practices for handguns with an emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.
  2. Pass the written examination. Online students pass the written examination as part of the online course.
  3. Complete range instruction. One to two hours with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor before the proficiency demonstration. The range portion may also be completed before the online classroom portion.
  4. Demonstrate handgun proficiency. Only a qualified LTC handgun instructor may administer the physical proficiency demonstration.
  5. Your training results are entered in RSD Connect. Your Texas Qualified LTC Instructor enters them; there is no paper certificate.
  6. Complete the DPS application in RSD Connect. Since October 1, 2026, applicants use RSD Connect and sign in with a Texas by Texas (TxT) account.
  7. Complete fingerprinting. DPS instructs original applicants to submit the online application and then schedule fingerprinting.
  8. Respond to DPS. Standard processing for an original application is approximately 60 days. If DPS requests more information, it must be received within 90 days or the application will be terminated.
