Your Texas License to Carry, Step by Step

Plain-language guidance for Texas LTC applicants: training, RSD Connect, the application, fingerprinting and what happens next. Every fact links to its official Texas DPS source.

Last verified with Texas DPS: October 2, 2026

Current as of October 2026: Texas DPS launched RSD Connect on October 1, 2026. You sign in with a Texas by Texas (TxT) account. DPS now states that students do not receive a paper training certificate: “training results will be entered into your RSD Connect account by your Texas Qualified LTC Instructor.” If an older article mentions an LTC-100, LTC-101 or LTC-104 certificate, the information on this page takes priority. The Texas LTC Process

  1. Check eligibility. Review the Texas and federal eligibility requirements. (DPS Application FAQs)
  2. Create your Texas by Texas (TxT) account. RSD Connect uses “Sign In with TxT.” Texas.gov says you’ll need a personal email address, a mobile phone number, a current Texas driver license or ID, and your Social Security number. (RSD Connect · Texas.gov)
  3. Complete classroom training. About 4–6 hours covering the four required topics, with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor or an approved Online Course Provider. Includes a written examination.
  4. Complete range instruction and the proficiency (shooting) demonstration. About 1–2 hours with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor. This can be done before the online classroom portion.
  5. Your training results are entered in RSD Connect. Your Texas Qualified LTC Instructor enters them; there is no paper certificate.
  6. Apply through RSD Connect. The standard fee is $40 (discounts may apply under special conditions). Fees are non-refundable. (DPS fee table)
  7. Get fingerprinted as directed by DPS after you submit your application.
  8. Respond to DPS. Standard processing is approximately 60 days for an original application. If DPS requests more information, it must be received within 90 days or the application will be terminated.
  9. License decision. Texas DPS makes all eligibility and licensing decisions.
