Texas LTC Application Checklist

Use this checklist as a step-by-step roadmap for your Texas License to Carry, from eligibility to the DPS licensing decision. Verify current DPS instructions before applying.

Last verified with Texas DPS: October 4, 2026

Current as of October 2026: Texas DPS applications are submitted through RSD Connect, using a Texas by Texas (TxT) sign-in. There is no paper training certificate; your Texas Qualified LTC Instructor enters your training results into your RSD Connect account.

Eligibility

  • Review the Texas LTC eligibility requirements
  • Consider federal firearms restrictions
  • Resolve any questions about criminal or court history before applying

Training

  • Complete the classroom instruction (4–6 hours, in person or with a DPS-approved Online Course Provider)
  • Pass the written examination
  • Complete range instruction (1–2 hours with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor)
  • Pass the handgun proficiency demonstration
  • Confirm your instructor has entered your training results in your RSD Connect account

DPS Application

  • Sign in to RSD Connect and submit your LTC application
  • Pay the DPS fee (standard $40; reduced fees may apply under special conditions; fees are non-refundable)
  • Complete fingerprinting as directed by DPS
  • Submit any required supporting documents

After Applying

  • Monitor your application status in RSD Connect
  • Check for DPS messages or requests
  • Respond promptly. Requested information must be received within 90 days or the application will be terminated
  • Expect standard processing of approximately 60 days for an original application
  • Keep copies of important records

Final Step

  • Receive the DPS licensing decision
