Protecting your home starts with preparation.

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home is an eight-hour NRA course that teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and provides information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. The course combines classroom instruction with live-fire work on the range. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds.

Minimum age: 18.

Who This Is For

Adults who keep, or plan to keep, a handgun at home for protection and who already have basic pistol skills: safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm. This course is not an introduction to shooting. If you are new to handguns, start with the NRA Basic Pistol Course.

Prerequisite

Bring one of the following: an NRA Basic Pistol Course certificate, an NRA FIRST Steps course certificate, an NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, or a military DD 214 showing pistol qualification. Without one of these, you may complete the NRA pre-course assessment before class.

What You Will Learn

  • Responsible, safe handling and storage of a firearm for home defense
  • Strategies for home safety and planning a household response
  • Responding to a violent confrontation in the home
  • Basic defensive shooting skills on the range
  • Firearms and the law: an educational overview of self-defense law. This is not legal advice.
  • How to choose a handgun for self-defense
  • Continued opportunities for skill development
